Well, what an exciting Monday morning we’ve had this week!
We found out my Owl Flight wallpaper design was in the final 5 of the Ideal Home Show Wallpaper competition 2 weeks ago, 14 days of nervous anticipation and then the big day finally arrived.
I arrived at the show on Monday morning and reported to the press office where I met with one of the other finalists, Wendy kendall. It just so happens she was also a graduate of the e-course I had recently taken, run by Rachael Taylor and Beth Nichols (Of which I can’t recommend enough! Take a look on their website for more details: The Art and Busines of Surface Pattern Design)
We got chatting and I was some what comforted that Wendy shared my anxiety and nerves (neither of us warmed to the fact we had to go on stage infront of an audience, appear on the big screens and even worse….speak on stage!!) I was glad I didn’t feel alone in my fear for public speaking 🙂
After chatting to both the lovely Wendy and Kat from Wallpapered.com I started to feel calmer…that was until Laurance Llewelyn Bowen walked into the room! Slightly star-struck and reminiscing about the days of Changing Rooms I introduced myself, we shook hands and briefly talked through the plan of action for the awards presentation. I hope he didn’t notice me pinching myself. ( I was stood next to LLB-eek! )
Wendy and I were then escorted to the stage where we were met with our designs displayed in a line on the big stage for all to see, It was actually really nice to see them proffessionally printed in true scale, It really brought the designs to life and I felt proud 🙂
Unfortunately 2 of the 5 finalists were unable to make it to the show, one of which was another fellow ABSPD graduate- the lovely Laura Escalante Mora who’s design ‘Blue Blossom’ looked fab on stage!
After engaging with the audience and giving a few hints and tips about feature walls, Laurance called us up on stage (hello shakey hands and knotted stomach!) and we each said a few words about our wallpapers and the thought process behind our designs.
I can’t actually remember exactly what I said but I think I managed to keep the nerves under control and managed not to let the stage fright get to me too much.
The moment then arrived to announce the winner…..and the prize goes to…….
Wendy Kendall for her Petite Street design!
Wendy’s design is gorgeous and very commercial with the cute little houses, trees and triangles…it would look ace adorning the walls of a children’s bedroom. A well deserved winner! Keep an eye out for Petite Street and more of Wendy’s designs available to buy on wallpapered.com very soon!
After the winner was announced we were all treated to a glass of champers and even LLB joined us in the celebration, sharing more hints and tips about our designs and his industry knowledge.
It really was a lovely day out and despite not winning I am extremely grateful to everyone that voted for my entry, I’m very proud of my fellow graduates and also to be able to call my self a finalist 🙂
And if you liked my owl wallpaper, you can get your hands on the design in the form of our new little martha and hepsie ltd notebooks. Just right for lists and doodles (or signatures of interior designers and Changing Room stars!)
